Namibia has been one of the few countries that have been recoding low levels of rainfall in Southern Africa .In the year 2023 high levels of rainfall have been recorded in the 2nd week of January 2023 in the Northern part of Namibia that lead to a flood , as a result of the flood areas like Ondjiva and other surrounding areas have been flooded , homes where under water, people walk from place to place in the means of water, such levels of rainfall are called the Efundja.
Even though efundja creates catastrophic floods that harms property, roads, displaces people from their homes, and occasionally causes companies to lose income, it has also been a blessing in disguise for communities.
In the typically dry region of the country, Efundja typically brings abundance of fish and water. Also, it enhances cattle grazing, as many northern farmers find it difficult to provide for their animals when it hasn't sufficiently rained.
Structure such as schools are closed because they where filled with water and that roads where also closed and they were also damaged . This floods have affected the lives of so many people in the for instance many of the families rely on crop production for food and for some people it is a source of income , with grazing land being flooded with water it made it difficult of man to head their cattle as a result of the water and that they also found it difficult to move from place to place .Woman on the other hand had to find other means of surviving looking for ways to find food and ways in which they can sustain their families.
Education sector has been affected negatively in in relation to the flood, areas it made education inaccessible, other teaching methods were implemented by the government where more teaching and learning time will be provided to the learners that have missed classes and that afternoon classes will be provided. Floods in the educational sector leave a path of devastation that may cause children's education to deteriorate to a point where it cannot be repaired.
To sum up I believe the government has a responsibility in ensuring that the people affected, are taken care of and that the receive all the necessary care that they need, with the aid that the government will obtain from other countries in relation to the flood they will be able to assist in all ways.
This was very informative.
ReplyDeleteI feel the Namibian government and the Disaster management unit can improve and become more effective in assisting such situations.
